Bulging disk help please!….?
I am 14. About a year ago I found out that I had 1 bulging disk and about two weeks ago I found out that I had another. Since I am so young, my disks are going to cause me a lot of pain (more than already has). My options are to deal with the pain for the rest of my life, have a surgery that costs a lot of money, or go to physical therapy which would mean that it would save me some time but I would have to still have surgery. My dad said to deal with the pain. In the last week the pain has gotten worse. The more active I am the more it hurts and but the more lazy I am, the worse it hurts. I was wondering of anyone knows any stretches I could do to help my back! Thanks
Alli
If you are 14 and live in the U.S. there are plenty of ways to have the surgery without putting your parents in the poor house. You really want to get it fixed now. Once you get older, like me, it's a lot worse. I've been in pain for 10 years even after surgery.
You or your parents should look up any medical schools or medical centers in your area. There are alway spine clinics that you pay based on what you can.
Good luck and here are a few links you should have your parents look at.

And beware of the chiropractor advise. One is partly responsible for me being disabled.
PS: Tell Dad, that as a Dad I think him saying deal with the pain is next to child neglect. The law thinks so too.

Stay away from the Chiro. They can’t do any more than a Physical Therapist can. Do the PT and deal with the pain. Most of these prolems will get better over time. See a good orthopod. That’s a real back doctor. One with an MD.

A bulging disc found on a film is rarely an indication for surgery…especially if there is back pain only. As the PA said, most of these problems do get better.
The first thing to do is to stay positive. Presense of a disc bulge is often a normal finding as bulging and degenerative processes (which happen to essentially everyone) starts in the second decade of life.
You very well might be an excellent candidate for physical therapy and never need surgery at any point in your life. However, if you believe you need surgery, this will be a hard barrier that will affect your motivation in physical therapy as well as your response to pain.
I would highly recommend you see a physical therapist who is credentialed in mechanical diagnosis and therapy. Go to http://www.apta.org They will show you the appropriate stretches for your back after an individualized assessment.
Good luck
