I have just had 2 surgeries in the same entry point on my neck. Is there anything I can do to help the scar?

January 29th, 2009

I had a 3 level fusion of my cervical spine 4c-7. Then one month after the surgery they found one of the screws was working itself out and it was in a dangerous position! So they had to go in and fix it, which they did. Now my neck, anterior, is really swollen, and of course, the scar is worse… any suggestions?

I had a similar situation with a scar on my forehead. I was in an accident requiring 140 some odd stitches. Roughly 2-3 weeks after the accident, I ran into something and the scar partially opened up.

What the doctors then had to do was overlap the skin for the new stiches. This left a bigger scar line.

What I was told a plastic surgeon could do is cut the scar again and stretch the skin around it back together. Although it wouldn't remove the scar completely it would definately improve the visual apperance of it.

Hope this helps.

There is not a perfect solution to this. Keeping it clean is critical, to prevent infection which can make it much worse. Neosporin may help with that, but isn't necessary if the wound is clean. Some people believe rubbing vitamin E on the wound will help, but there is no data on that either. If you're really worried, get an appointment with a plastic surgeon asap and let them take a look at it. They may have specific advice or a suggestion for revising the incision to reduce the scar.
