occupational or physical therapists please help?

January 31st, 2009

I use a computer about 6-7 hours per day. I have developed cervical disc problems, including herniated discs, and have severe pain down my right arm (I'm right handed). I am diagnosed with cervical radiculopathy. Using the mouse is the most painful thing I do. Finding a comfortable chair is also a problem. I tried switching to my left hand but that slows me down too much. I have a modified "carpal tunnel" keyboard already and typing isn't much of a problem. My employer has said they will buy me any kind of mouse and chair I need but I have to find out what types to get. What do you recommend? Please help; it is almost to the point where I can't do my job any more. Thank you.
Mistify, thank you so much for your helpful answer. I do intend to go to PT; my appointment just hasn't come up yet. I have to have a neurosurgical evaluation first. I'm just trying to do things to aleviate the discomfort now. I know it is only part of the solution. Thanks again for your help!

The brand of chair doesn't matter…what matters most is that you are able to attain appropriate posture. There is no one chair that is right for everyone. Most likely, you would benefit from a drop down tray for your mouse so you can mouse with your upper arm at your side and your elbow bent to 90 degrees rather than reaching forward with your shoulder. You will also need to focus on posture correction.

I would HIGHLY recommend you actually undergo treatment…correcting your work station is only part of the solution. I would recommend you see a PT who is trained in mechanical diagnosis and therapy. Go to: http://www.mckenziemdt.org to find such a PT. Ask your physician for a referral.
