My fiance had surgery for a herniated disk three years ago.?

January 31st, 2009

Now he suffers daily from sciatica pain. I am a nursing student, and I think that he probably has an extrusion of the nucleus pulposis and that extrusion is pressing on the sciatic nerve root. Is this a possibility and what can we do (other than surgery) to decompress the extrusion? I know he needs to see a doctor and we are making an appointment. I would just like some info in the mean time. Thanks!
Thank you very much!

See the doctor. It is just too easy to go from a nerve problem to a permanent nerve damage. I know because that's what happened to me. Now I am disabled. Here are a few links that as a nursing student you may enjoy

The first two look like they are the same link but they aren't, both are really good. The second one should really interest you.

Good luck with your nursing career. It is a great profession.

He probably does have sciatica or inflammation of the sciatic nerve most commonly from a herniated disc but all sots of things can cause his problems. An evaluation by his MD will help with a definite diagnosis hopefully.Things have changed in the last few years and MDs are not so prone to operating on ruptured discs as other treatments often help. You might be advised to have physical therapy.Epidural steroid shots often help as well.Good luck!
